HEMO CONCEPTS, INC. ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH RAINBOW BABIES & CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Eatontown, N.J. – Chronic blood supply shortages, rapidly escalating costs, and associated clinical complications have sparked a growing, worldwide interest in alternatives to donor blood transfusions. Integrated blood conservation programs have been shown to significantly reduce the need for donor blood transfusions.
Today, Hemo Concepts, Inc., an integrated blood conservation company based in Eatontown, N.J., announced their partnership with Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital of Cleveland, Ohio, to found the world’s only School of Pediatric Integrated Blood Conservation. As part of the collaboration, Hemo Concepts will provide Rainbow with its patent-pending e-BOS ® System, a comprehensive, online education and database management system for the implementation and management of hospital-based integrated blood conservation programs. For their part, Rainbow will provide the logistical support for Hemo Concepts’ educators, who will train physicians and nurses from around the world how to develop and maintain integrated pediatric blood conservation best practice standards at their hospitals.
Founded more than a century ago, Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is a nationally recognized leader in pediatric care, and was ranked as one of the top six pediatric centers in America by U.S. News and World Report in 2005. Reducing donor blood transfusions during patient care enhances patient clinical outcomes and results in superior financial performance for hospitals. “Many patients do not want to be exposed to blood, if at all possible. Since there are alternatives to blood transfusions…, we really need to optimize blood conversation techniques that both our… [organizations] have developed to a unique level,” said Molly Winterich, Director of Pediatric Nursing at Rainbow. “We now have an accurate database system by which we can compare blood volume data to support logical decisions we are making when using blood conservation techniques,” said Winterich, describing the e-BOS ® system developed by Hemo Concepts.
Founded in 1991, Hemo Concepts provides clinical services, consulting, staffing, training and education to help hospitals reduce unnecessary donor blood transfusions. “I am very excited about the opportunity to collaborate with this world-renowned pediatric center,” said Sharon Vernon, V.P. of Education and Program Development for Hemo Concepts. “This is a significant step in the educational process for pediatric blood conservation, because it is the first (school) of its kind.” Through similar partnerships, Ms. Vernon recently spearheaded the establishment of two other campuses of Hemo Concepts’ School of Integrated Blood Conservation, the first being at St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, Missouri, which won the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for Healthcare in 2003, and at Fairview Hospital, which is a member of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Health System of Ohio.
“This is an important part of our solution to reduce the millions of unnecessary donor blood transfusions given each year to patients at U.S. hospitals”, reflected Damon Keeley, Founder and CEO of Hemo Concepts. “Our goal is to develop a national system of training and education to help U.S. hospitals eliminate unnecessary transfusions, and this partnership with our friends at Rainbow is especially gratifying to me, because it will serve to improve the quality of life of our most precious gifts…our children.”
