Deborah C. German, MD, Appointed Chairman of the Board of Medical Advisors of Hemo Concepts, Inc.

Eatontown, NJ—Hemo Concepts, Inc., an integrated blood conservation company based in Eatontown, New Jersey, has announced today the appointment of Dr. Deborah C. German as Chairman of its Board of Medical Advisors.

Founded in 1991, Hemo Concepts provides products, services; training and education to assist hospitals reduce the number of unnecessary donor blood transfusions, which leads to improved clinical outcomes for patients and superior financial outcomes for hospitals.

“It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with Hemo Concepts,” Dr. German explained. “Their goal—integrated blood conservation on a global basis—is very worthy. Two factors are converging to make the work of Hemo Concepts compelling. One is patient safety and the safety of the blood supply—present and future. The other is disaster preparedness and the lack of blood supply during these events. Given these serious issues, the efforts of Hemo Concepts are crucial to the work of caring for patients.”

Dr. German, who earned her MD degree from Harvard Medical School in 1976 and a BA in Chemistry from Boston University in 1972, is currently the Petersdorf Scholar-in-Residence at the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). In working with Hemo Concepts, Dr. German explained that it is her ambition to bring “medical and business experts together to achieve more in a short period of time than could ever be done separately.”

Prior to her AAMC appointment in 2005, Dr. German was the President and CEO of St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN, a 541-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital. Dr. German led a highly successful turnaround effort at St. Thomas, which greatly improved profitability, employee and professional relations, and patient satisfaction.

“Dr. German is just the right person to provide guidance during our growth at Hemo Concepts,” said Damon Keeley, Hemo Concepts Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “She brings a superb blend of executive, clinical and academic skill to this important advisory post.” Despite its best efforts, the nation’s health care system has not eliminated blood shortages, clinical problems, or the financial impact created by America’s reliance on an increasingly costly and shrinking donor blood supply. “Hemo Concepts has developed the solution to the crucial issue of blood supply—nationally and globally,” Keeley explained.

From 1988 to 2002, Dr. German was affiliated with the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where she was responsible for all medical education programs as Senior Associate Dean of Medical Education and Associate Dean of Students.

According to the American Red Cross, the majority of its regional blood service centers operate on less than one day’s supply of blood. These shortages, combined with continually escalating blood related costs and transfusion-related risk, has generated significant interest in alternatives to donor blood transfusions.

Hemo Concerts offers a platform of products and services, including:

e-BOS® (Evidenced-based Outcomes System)— A state-of-the-art web-based educational system with two components—training provided by top educators on the development and execution of integrated blood conservation programs; and an electronic reporting system providing a HIPAA-compliant, evidence-based database allowing hospitals to confirm both patient and financial outcomes.

• The Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Institute — The world’s only education institution for the teaching of and training in integrated blood conservation concepts.

• Consulting and Staffing — Contractual engagements to assist hospitals develop and manage hospital-wide integrated blood conservation programs.

• Autotransfusion Services — A service that reduces the amount of blood and blood products transfused in the operating room by recycling the patient’s own blood and blood products.
